ARONA AND THE STATUE OF SAN CARLO BORROMEO

Arona is a medieval town located on the south/west shore of Lake Maggiore and overlooked by the Rocca Park.

The old town is known for its narrow streets, with shops, restaurants and cafes. For some years now it has been permanently set up by artistics installations as coloured umbrellas or garlands suspended in the void.

This iconic image has made Arona famous in many art and design magazines, but its lakeside and fortress gardens have long been a popular destination, especially in spring and summer.

From Arona you can see the east side of Lake Maggiore and the imposing fortress and castle of Angera.

"Arona means diving yourself into the many colors of the old town and the wonderful sunlit umbrellas. After a calm walk along the lake, you can reach the fortress; then up to the top of the magnificent statue of San Carlo Borromeo.

We were lucky and the day was wonderful. Arona is the perfect starting point to visit the main places of Lake Maggiore."

Fabio e Paolo

The fortress of Arona was a medieval defensive structure destroyed during the Napoleonic times. Today the area is the ideal place for a walk and a panoramic pin-nic. It is often also a venue for events and concerts.

To the north, there is the famous statue of San Carlo Borromeo made in the mid-sixteenth century. Today, it is the second tallest statue in the world - with a height of 23 meters - after the Statue of Liberty in New York.

The statue can also be visited internally by paying a ticket directly at the gates at the foot of the staircase, in front of the Basilica of San Carlo.

A ROMANESQUE CHURCH IN A GENUINE TESSIN HAMLET

The San Bernardo church is an old-time location. It is only accessible on foot from Sementina and Monte Carasso or from the close Tessin hamlet Curzùtt.

It is surrounded by chestnut woods and stone rural houses, linked by the paved paths: an incredible location with an incredible view, which is great for a family day-trip.

The main building of the San Bernardo church is in Romanesque style and dates back to the 11th or 12th century – there aren’t reliable documents about it. The church’s area was expanded through two following restructuring measures and the bell tower and the porch at the entrance were added.

The oldest frescos date back to 1300; all the indoor facades were renovated, turning this wonderful church into a jewel surrounded by the woods.

The main door of the San Bernardo church with the view of the frescos.

As witnesses of ancient life, there are rural buildings and a nice fountain on the outside; the genuine rural village of Curzùtt has been renovated and enhanced by a local association during the years.
You can reach Curzùtt by taking the gondola from Monte Carasso. The village also has a hostel that offers a full restaurant service.

The San Bernardo Romanesque church can be visited for free. If the front door is locked, you can ask for the keys to the hostel in Curzùtt
Following the path, you reach the Carasc Tibetan bridge – the entrance is free for the entire year.

The “Curzutt – San Bernardo Church – Carasc Tibetan Bridge” itinerary is a great spring and fall hiking option for the whole family.

The Monte Carasso cable car – Mornera is tiny and can transport no more than 8 people at a time. To avoid long queues in high season, we suggest you book your ticket online with fixed ascent time.

On the way down, you will need to call the cable car by pressing a button inside a locker located on the top of the stairs at the Curzutt cable car station.

HOW TO GET TO THE CHURCH OF SAN BERNARDO IN CURZUTT

The church of san Bernardo, is located near the village of Curzùtt, in the hills of Monte Carasso and Sementina, in Tessin, only a few kilometers from Bellinizona and the Lake Maggiore.

For those of you arriving by car, you should know that parking space is limited at the foot of the cable car. We advise you to park at the Monte Carasso town hall (300m from the cable car). There are excellent public transport connections by bus from Bellinzona and Locarno train stations in the Monte Carasso direction.

Once you arrive in the town of Monte Carasso, you can choose an easier route or a more difficult one. The first option entails taking the Monte Carasso- Mornera cable car and getting off at the first stop and then continuing on the old mule path for about 20 mins until you get to the Church. The second choice would be to walk up from the cable car station to Curzùtt and the Church. Aprox. 1hr 30min.

We opted for the shorter solution and we have to admit that the trip in the tiny cable car itself, was well worth the trip.
