SKYWAY THE PANORAMIC CABLE CAR OF MONTE BIANCO

Skyway is the futuristic panoramic cable car on the Italian side of Mont Blanc.

In 2015 the new lift replaced the historic cable car that connected Entrèves, the village of Courmayeur, to the Rifugio Torino, now reaching the new station of Punta Helbronner at 3466m.

The new concept of the Skyway cableway has revolutionized the visitor's experience, making the ascent and visit of the new exhibition spaces one of the must-see attractions of the Mont Blanc region.

Today the ascent with Skyway takes place inside large circular cabins, which rotate several times 360° during the ascent, allowing all walkers to enjoy the panorama of the peaks and ridges of Mont Blanc and the Courmayeur valley.

The offer is completed by many attractions in the two stations, built with high technological level, accurate design, and elements in steel, glass, and wood.

"Our first time at Punta Helbronner was with the old cable car, cramped in the small blue cabin, and then skiing down the beautiful Vallée Blanche, an experience documented in our ExplorAlp videos.

Our first ascent with Skyway gave us a strong emotion, both for the engineering and architectural work carried out and for the beauty of the spaces and the fittings.

We already knew the wonderful panorama, but certainly the platform The Sky is not to be missed to take breathtaking panoramic photos.

We also really appreciated the exhibition and the experimentation of the Cuvee du Guides, with the curious little ax in the dedicated wooden box."

Lorenzo e Paolo

THE PAVILLION MIDDLE STATION

From Entrèves departure station, at 1300m, the Skiway cabins reach the first station of Pavillon du Mont Fréty, at 2173m. Here it is necessary to get off, to change cabins.

We advise the less athletic to relax in the exhibition halls and refreshments of this station, or walking on the terrace and outside the cable car.

We remind you that the total height difference from Entréves to Punta Helbronner is about 2150m, with the summit altitude of 3466m. An overhang in altitude that weighs down your legs, shortens your breath and could cause other problems for the more sensitive if you travel too fast.

The Pavillon du Mont Fréty station has a large outdoor area for leisure and walks, which in summer is equipped with a lovely alpine botanical garden.

Inside there is a conference and cinema room, where videos on the history of Mont Blanc and mountaineering are shown, the Hangar 2173 museum room dedicated to the construction of the two cable cars, with an exhibition of the old cabin, some shops, a temporary exhibition of paintings and a restaurant with a panoramic terrace.

THE HIGHEST BUBBLES IN EUROPE

An area of the Pavillon du Mont Fréty station is dedicated to the exhibition of the wines of the Morgex Cave Mont Blanc winery and the maturation of its Cuvee du Guides, a classic method sparkling wine considered the highest bubbles in Europe.

THE HELBRONNER TOP STATION

The summit station reaches an altitude of 3466m and is built on the Helbronner Point, close to the Mont Blanc glacier. An external ladder leads to the circular viewing platform The Sky, which offers a 360° view of the majestic Mont Blanc, the ridges of the Auigille de Peuterey, the Géant glacier, the Auguile du Midi and the famous Tooth of the Giant.

Inside there is the Bistrot Panoramic with coffee bar service and a nice mailbox.

Don't miss the Mont Blanc room with its stained-glass window and view of the highest peak in Europe, the Sky Vertigo walk on a glass terrace suspended in the void and the Crystal Room, an exhibition dedicated to the crystals of the Mont Blanc region.

From the station of Punta Helbronner, mountaineers and ski-mountaineers can access the Géant glacier to reach the walls and peaks of the Mont Blanc group or descend on skis along the Vallée Blanche freeride route to Mer de Glace and Chamonix.

TIMETABLES AND PRICES SKYWAY MONTE BIANCO

The Skyway Mont Blanc ticket can be purchased on-site or online, on the official Skyway Mont Blanc website, and has a price of 52,00 euro round trip.

There are discounted offers, for early morning climbs and low season periods as well as packages with other Aosta Valley attractions.

STELLISEE LAKE: THE MIRROR OF MATTERHORN

An unmissable destination for hikers and photographers is the Stellisse pond in the Zermatt valley, which we can certainly call the mirror of the Matterhorn.

This small alpine lake, thanks to its position perfectly aligned with the east face and the Hornli ridge of the Matterhorn, is today one of the most photographed lakes in the Alps.

Lake Stellisee is located at an altitude of 2537m on the east side of the Zermatt valley and can be reached in about 20 minutes on foot from the top station of the Blauherd cable car.

"Also featured in our video ExplorAlp - A Day on the Alps, Lake Stellisee is an easy destination that can give you incredible emotions, especially at sunrise and sunset.

The most daring can take their tent and admire the stars reflected in the lake together with the pyramid-shaped outline of the Matterhorn."

Fabio e Paolo

From Lake Stellisee you can reach the Fluhalp refuge in a short time and continue towards the great glacier of the Monte Rosa group.

Alternatively, you can walk back to the Sunnega funicular station, passing the Grindjisee lake, which is surrounded by a series of larch trees and offers a beautiful setting, for another photo with the Matterhorn.

Near the station of Sunnega there is the Wolli entertainment area, adjacent to the Leisee pond, dedicated to children and youngsters. This is a great space, for an afternoon of fun, for the whole family.

Lake Stellisee can be reached from Zermatt via the Sunnega funicular railway and then on foot along an easy path. Alternatively, it is possible to take the Baluherd cable car up again and walk only the last part of the path for about 20 minutes.

GORNERGRAT RAILWAY TO THE ZERMATT SUMMITS

After a leisurely stroll through the center of Zermatt, you can set off to discover its beautiful peaks and glaciers by taking the historic Zermatt-Gornergrat cogwheel train.

The Gornergrat railway was built at the end of the 19th century and connects the center of Zermatt to the top of the Gornergrat, overcoming an altitude difference of 1500m thanks to bridges, tunnels, and tracks that run along the mountainside, giving passengers a fantastic view of the Matterhorn and the entire valley.

At the top of the Gornergrat, there is a large astronomical observatory with station and restaurants. A wonderful panoramic terrace offers a 360-degree view from the Matterhorn to the peaks of Monte Rosa.

During the ascent, which takes about 30 minutes, it is also possible to descend to intermediate stations and in summer back to Zermatt along paths.

"We have reached Zermatt and here the choice is really wide.

We welcomed the opportunity of our international ski pass, which we bought in Cervinia, and boarded the Zermatt-Gornergrat train. An ideal place for a break after all morning on skis.

The view is wonderful and dazzling with all this snow, maybe we will come back in summer, to walk to the glacier and the famous Monte Rosa Refuge in the shape of a diamond. "

Fabio e Paolo

The Gornergrat Railway, Gornergrat Bahn in German, is an integral part of the Matterhorn Ski Paradise ski area in winter and can be used by skiers with a ski pass to reach the slopes and lifts.

On the website you can choose the priority boarding, to select your seat (extra service for a fee). Throughout the year the use of the railway can be included in dedicated packages, with theme dinners and events, or included in a multi-pass ticket, for the ascent of other attractions, such as the Klein Matterhorn cable car.

The cost of the return ticket Zermatt - Gornergrat is about 100 euros in high season (July and August).

Mountaineers can use this railway and then continue on to the Gorner glacier and the futuristic Monte Rosa mountain hut, a modern building made of wood and metal in the shape of a diamond, the base for climbing in the Monte Rosa group.

ZERMATT THE CRADLE OF MATTERHORN

Zermatt is certainly an unmissable destination on our journey through the Alps. The most famous mountain in the world, the Matterhorn, which has become a symbol of mountaineering history, towers above the valley with its unmistakable pyramid shape and marks the border between Switzerland and Italy.

It was precisely the birth of mountaineering, with the conquest of the Matterhorn peak (the German name for the Matterhorn), that changed the destiny of the village of Zermatt forever, until now a small community of a few hundred people employed in sheep farming and difficult mountain farming.

Zermatt has managed to maintain a certain character, thanks to a center that is still well preserved, with the presence of many original wooden buildings, but above all because of the lack of cars.

It is not possible to reach Zermatt with vehicles, which have to be left at the parking lot in Tasch, where you have to take the train and reach the center of Zermatt with some excitement. At the station, the taxis are still horse-drawn carriages or electric minibusses, like all service vehicles in the country.

"The excitement already assails you at the gates of Cervinia or Zermatt, before you even reach the station. The summit of the Matterhorn Cervino is always there overlooking the valley.

After the first experience with skis in winter, we returned to Zermatt in summer as tourists, we allowed ourselves a long walk to the Hornli Hut, a destination for all mountaineers who want to climb the Matterhorn ridge.

Zermatt also has a lively evening life. Here you can breathe international mountaineering in all places. Climbers, mountain bikers and hikers gather in the pubs of the Walser chalets to tell each other the adventures of the day. We only breathed the same climate in Chamonix, but Zermatt, being without a car, has a slow charm of yesteryear. "

Fabio e Paolo

In the center, we find historic hotels, the church with its pointed bell tower and the Matterhorn Museum, which tells the history of mountaineering on this summit and the evolution of the village of Zermatt. Crossing the station square, you can board the Zermatt-Gornergrat train, a historic cogwheel railway built at the end of the 19th century, which reaches the wonderful terrace of the observatory at an altitude of 3089m and the access path to the great Gorner ice, offering a wonderful panorama of the entire Alpine chain from the Matterhorn to Monte Rosa.

The Cervino-Matterhorn Ski Paradise is one of the largest ski areas in the Alps, which today offers 355km of slopes divided between the Swiss side of Zermatt and the Italian side of Cervinia. The two areas are connected by cable cars to the Klein Matterhorn and Plateau Rosa, accessible with a single international ski pass.

The Klein Matterhorn is home to the Glacier Palace (at 3883m), a museum of art installations, built directly in the ice of the mountain. The arrival of the cable car also offers a panoramic restaurant, opposite the severe east face of the Matterhorn.

In summer the Zermatt Valley offers numerous alpine routes, hiking trails to discover the mountain pastures and glaciers and mountain bike trails that can also be reached by train and cable car.

Lovers of panoramic photography should not miss the famous Lake Stellisee, where the Matterhorn is perfectly reflected. The approach to the lake is possible on foot or with the Sunnegga cable car.

Zermatt is also the departure or arrival point of the famous Glacier Express, the train route from Zermatt in Canton Valais to St. Moritz in Canton Graubünden, through the villages and landscapes of the Swiss Alps.
